As in the past, a wide range of financial support schemes for companies exists in Germany – from loans and subsidies to sureties. Practically every entrepreneurial change that necessitates financing can be partly financed with corresponding support components.
Loan support is one of the key components here. In the past, support mainly took the form of low interest. Today, the trend is towards the inclusion in the promotion programmes of elements which reduce the risk for the bank and/or improve the equity situation of the companies concerned.
This is done in some cases by granting (partial) exemption from liability (particularly for start-ups and young companies) for the transmitting banks, as well as by offering subordinated loans in which the promotion institute releases the applicant company from the necessity of providing security by means of collateralisation subordination, thereby practically providing the company with equity capital. The latest mezzanine financing instruments combine subordination elements with loans requiring security for the bank in the customary way.
