In terms of transport, the County of Heinsberg now profits from something that used to act as an obstacle: its immediate proximity to the borders with Belgium and the Netherlands.
Besides the direct links to the Ruhr basin and the Rhein region via three A roads and the A 46, A 44 and A 61 motorways crossing the region, there is the added benefit of being able to reach the Dutch (A 2 Maastricht-Eindhoven) and Belgian (A 2 Genk-Brussels) motorway networks quickly. The same applies to Maastricht-Aachen Airport situated in nearby Limburg and the inland ports of Born and Roermond on the River Maas.
The main Aachen-Mönchengladbach-Düsseldorf line links the County of Heinsberg to the neighbouring cities and hubs of the European rail network.
In addition, several international airports and the seaports of Antwerp and Rotterdam can be reached in 45 minutes to approx. 2 hours.
