Wegberg is the northernmost and simultaneously the youngest town in the County of Heinsberg. Even though in its current form it only acquired town rights in 1973, Wegberg can look back on a long and eventful past.

There is much to be said for Wegberg, for example its location in the Maas-Schwalm-Nette international nature reserve, the varied and historic landscape, its proximity to Mönchengladbach, good traffic connections (both to the A52 and A61 motorways) and its balanced mix of retail and service businesses that all add up to an excellent quality of life and leisure.

Most recently, the district of Wildenrath has attracted admiration from around the country as a model for the successful conversion of a former military site. Previously a British Royal Air Force base, it was used to create an appealing commercial and industrial estate shortly after it was vacated, while the larger part was designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The decision by Siemens AG to locate its rail vehicle testing centre in Wildenrath has raised hopes, not only in Wegberg, that the town is on the right track for successful future development. In the meantime, further international companies have found their way into the area and now enjoy the benefits of a natural environment.
