Wassenberg looks back on a chequered history. It’s a glorious past reflected today in well preserved historical buildings, especially Wassenberg castle that towers above the town. Just as inviting is the fact that the entire town is part of the Maas-Schwalm-Nette international nature reserve. Add to this the long string of events with an impact beyond the region and the much-praised quality of the restaurants and hotels and it’s easy to see why Wassenberg is such a draw for leisure-seekers and holidaymakers.

Now that there is no more noise from the former British military airbase in neighbouring Wildenrath and the A 46 has been improved, bringing it closer to the town, Wassenberg has become even more attractive as a place to live and work. Added to this is the increased availability of sites for private purposes and the designation of new commercial areas.

In order to bring municipal land development policy in line with market conditions, ESW Entwicklungsgesellschaft Stadt Wassenberg GmbH, the shareholders of which are the town of Wassenberg and S-Immobilien-Beteiligungs-Gesellschaft, was established in 1999.
