Selfkant is Germany’s westernmost municipality, and still fairly young. Under Dutch administration from 1949 to 1963, eight formerly independent communities merged in 1969 and adopted the name Selfkant after the landscape in the western part of the county.

Today Selfkant reaches into the Netherlands like a peninsula. Now that the internal European borders have been opened, this geographical position gives Selfkant the chance to develop as a suburb of the Dutch town of Sittard. It can also benefit from scores of cultural activities on offer there and excellent links to the Dutch/Belgian motorway network.

Conversely, Selfkant offers quality of life in surroundings unusually close to nature and many attractive places of interest for recreation and relaxation.
